Treatment Options

Bioidentical hormones are compounds that are created from naturally occurring substance that are purified, combined and tested within a laboratory to mimic those produced naturally in our bodies. Bioidentical hormones are used to help treat hormonal imbalances that occur in both women and men. Commonly used hormones are Thyroid, Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone & others.

The Bioidentical hormones used from compounding can be made into various forms: Tablets, Capsules, Suppositories, Creams, Lozenges, Troches & Gels. They are derived from plant sources such as yams or soy. They are processed so that the result is no different than human hormones. They do not have to be converted by the body into the actual hormone.

Bioidentical hormones come in a variety of strengths and can be formulated into creams, gels, ointments, patches, pills, suppositories and pellets that are individualized for each patient’s needs.

Compared to traditional synthetic hormones, they are a safer and more effective form of treatment for hormonal balance with fewer side effects. Side effects are one of the most common reasons patients discontinue taking hormone therapy.

Oral Hormone
Treatment

Oral hormone therapy can include pills, lozenges, troches, or  sublingual, which are dissolvable compounded medications formed in the shape of a cough drop or circle & slowly dissolved over a short time period (ex: 30 minutes).

Topical Hormone
Treatment

Another mode of delivery is through a patch which provides a steady release of hormones through one’s skin & used once or twice a week.
Hormones can also be provided through a steady release of cream or gel that can be absorbed into the blood stream through the skin.

Hormone Injections, Tablets or Pellet
Treatment

Intramuscular injections can be administered every 2-4 weeks & provides a steady release. Also suppositories or tablets can be inserted vaginally & bypasses the liver. There are also subcutaneous implants known as pellet therapy & is replaced every 3-6 months.

ORAL HORMONE TREATMENT

Oral medication is the most common form of ERT. Examples are conjugated Estrogens (Premarin), estradiol (Estrace), and Estratab.

TOPICAL HORMONE TREATMENT

Skin patches are another type of ERT. Examples are Alora, Climara, Estraderm, and Vivelle-Dot. Combination estrogen and progestin patches — like Climara Pro and Combipatch — are also available.

HORMONE PELLET TREATMENT

Subcutaneous hormone pellet implantation of estrogen alone, or estrogen combined with testosterone, or testosterone alone when used as hormone replacement therapy.

gynecological
exams

Women should start receiving annual gynecology exams between the ages of 18 and 21, or when they become sexually active. However, if you are experiencing any gynecological symptoms, you should schedule an exam sooner.
